A vascular ultrasound may be necessary to provide more information that other imaging may not pick up or evaluate such as the degree of a stenosis or narrowing of a vessel or pathology that needs to be interpreted in real time. At AUS, we are dedicated vascular sonographers with a strong background in more specialised and complex studies.

Vascular ultrasound can detect blood clots, atherosclerosis in arteries and blockages, insufficiency in veins and varicose veins, aneurysms and dissections, carotid artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, and compression syndromes such as May Thurner, Nutcracker, and Thoracic Outlet.

A handheld transducer is used externally in conjunction with a water-based gel to emit sound waves and create images. Both images and video clips are utilized to document findings.

Depending on the exam that is ordered, anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour will be scheduled per study.

Yes, vascular ultrasound is a specialised modality. Ultrasounds can be divided into subgroups such as vascular, general, echocardiography, and obstetric ultrasound. General ultrasounds include exams that evaluate various body regions and structures such as breast, thyroid, abdominal, and soft tissue. At AUS our focus is on anything and everything vascular. As dedicated vascular sonographers here at AUS, we only perform vascular ultrasounds due to our specialised training.
